Dr. Bhavesh Modi is a distinguished physician in Preventive and Social Medicine and a recognized expert in Public Health Policy and Management, with over two decades of experience in academia, research, and health systems strengthening at national and international levels.
Throughout his career, Dr. Modi has played a pivotal role in the design, implementation, and evaluation of several large-scale public health programs, including Tobacco Control, TB-HIV co-infection management, National Tuberculosis Elimination Program (NTEP), Maternal and Child Health, School Health, Global Health, Health Technology Assessment (HTA), Organ Donation, and the flagship "Save the Girl Child" initiative. His work has contributed significantly to the development of evidence-based health policies and operational research frameworks in India.
Dr. Modi holds an MBBS and MD (Preventive and Social Medicine) from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, India, and dual advanced degrees—an MPH in Health Policy and Systems and an MBA in Healthcare Management—from Johns Hopkins University, USA. He is also the recipient of prestigious Fellowship of Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine and International Medical Sciences Academy in recognition of his contributions in the field.
Currently, Dr. Modi serves as the Director of the Indian Council of Medical Research – National Institute of Occupational Health (ICMR-NIOH). Prior to this, he held several key academic and administrative leadership positions, including Professor and Head of the Department of Community and Family Medicine at AIIMS Rajkot (2021–2025), Associate Professor and Nodal Officer for Health Policy with the Government of Gujarat (2013–2021), and Assistant Professor and Nodal Officer for Tobacco Control and TB/HIV with the Government of Gujarat (2006–2013).
Dr. Modi has led or contributed to over 30 national and international research projects, authored more than 100 scientific publications, and has been the recipient of over 15 national and international honours, including a WHO SEARO citation for excellence in tobacco control. In addition to over two decades of teaching and training undergraduate and postgraduate medical students in India, Dr. Modi has provided technical, programmatic, and administrative leadership to the Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of Gujarat, and the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare in areas including Tuberculosis Control, Tobacco Control, Health Policy, Food Safety, and Health Technology Assessment.
